ESTUAR No.2
A context-specific art project for cultivating intertidal imagination, inspired by Sant’Andrea in Venice, Italy.

The Sentience of Sound
15:00-18:00: The Sentience of Sound: A Workshop with Theresa Wong
20:00: Solo Cello and Voice Performance by Theresa Wong (feat. Sofia Pozdniakova)

In this semi-improvisational, collaborative workshop led by Theresa Wong, we will create a space in which to explore the sentience of sound within and around us. How do abstract sounds in our environments carry meanings, emotions, consciousness? How do our cells receive these vibrations on a subconscious level? How about language and landscape, and their relationship? We can deepen and expand our connections with the natural world through attentive practices of listening, breathing, and vocalizing, among others, tuning into the kinetic presence of the body. We will begin to sense how vibrations are at the core of the way we connect to ourselves, each other, and the world around us. The workshop is open to participants of all backgrounds.

The workshop will be followed by a concert by Theresa Wong in the small church on the island, which will conclude with an improvised performance with Sofia Pozdniakova.

This is the second event in the ESTUAR series initiated by Q aka Kyoo Lee in October 2023, an experience-focused curatorial project inspired by the island of Sant’Andrea, where participants explore intertidal fields of arts, culture, science, history, and technology by unlearning to sense the world carefully, critically, creatively. We approach ESTUAR as a clarion call for connective pauses in our time of global and ecological crisis.
